City sends out plastic bag warnings to merchants before ban
The Department of Sanitation has started sending out its first official notices to store owners around the city notifying them of the coming implementation of the new law mandating a five-cent per bag fee for plastic bags, according to a supermarket manager who is upset at the rule change. Bob Capano, the manager of a Gristedes supermarket, said his store received an official notice that the law will go into effect on Feb. 15. The informational flier contains a headline reading "First Official Notice," along with an order mandating that the flier be placed somewhere in the store to inform customers of the rule change.

The Boston Globe 's Mark Shanahan has written that Charlotte Feng Ford, a 1983 graduate of Smith College, has gifted the school's museum with $2.5 million for an endowed contemporary art curatorship. Ford is a major art collector based in New York and owns works by Karen Kilimnik, David Hammons, Gabriel Orozco, Alice Neel, and Laura Owens, among others.

There was a time when debates about whether Los Angeles or New York had the better Chinese food scene invariably came down to the knockout win for New York: "Yeah, but do you have a place like Xi'An Famous Foods?" Brooklyn hitmakers chef Dale Talde, David Massoni, and John Bush are eyeing Chinatown for their next restaurant empire, with plans for four different venues at new hotel Joie de Vivre, as first reported by The Lo-Down .
