No school! - Lunar New Year option to be a school holiday in NYC

Schools in neighborhoods throughout New York City with high populations of Asian American students, such as Chinatown in Manhattan and Flushing in Queens, annually see large numbers of absences on Lunar New Year. At P.S. 124, on Division Street in Manhattan, school officials reported absentee rates of up to 60 percent last Lunar New Year holiday.

The 16th Annual Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade in New York took place over the weekend as thousands of people joined in the festivities! The spectacle featured elaborate floats, marching bands, lion and dragon dances galore, Asian musicians, magicians, acrobats and processions by local NYC organizations. More than 6,000 people marched in the parade which started at Mott Street and traveled through practically every street around Chinatown, finally dispersing at Broome/Forsyth.

CB 3 Committee Asks DOT for Protected Bikeway on Chrystie Street

The community board covering the Lower East Side and Chinatown is set to ask DOT to transform the Chrystie Street bike lane from barely visible stripes blocked by double-parked cars into a two-way protected bikeway along Sara D. Roosevelt Park, connecting the Manhattan Bridge with the Second Avenue protected bike lane.
