A political awakening is taking hold with Asian-American New Yorkers
As Lunar New Year celebrations wind down, it's worth noting that this transition from the Year of the Goat to the Year of the Monkey marks a sharp rise in Asian-American political consciousness in the city - with bigger changes likely ahead. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli holds his annual New Year affair Thursday at the Yung Wing School in Chinatown; we bet he'll hear something new this year.

Scranton native Stephen Karam's 'The Humans' - A family, and a nation, under siege
"Doing life twice sounds like the only thing worse than doing it once," says the beleaguered paterfamilias of "The Humans," Scranton native Stephen Karam's piercingly funny, bruisingly sad comedy-drama about an American family teetering on the edge of the abyss. The title may sound generic, but there's nothing blurry about Mr. Karam's scorching drama, which opened on Broadway on Thursday at the Helen Hayes Theater.

BWW Review: Stephen Karam's Fresh, Funny and Chilling the Humans Moves to Broadway
Family holiday gatherings can be volatile enough in real life, but any playgoer will tell you that the mixture of parents, adult children and a special time of the year on stage is a recipe for big trouble. In his fresh, funny and chilling take on the genre, The Humans , which was just about immediately announced for a Broadway transfer after October's Off-Broadway opening, playwright Stephen Karam believably adds elements of an old-fashioned Irish ghost story to the mix.
